Geneva 2008: Volkswagen Golf TDI Hybrid Concept
Volkswagen’s Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) is being put into good use by the company. Audi even slapped it on the massive Audi Q7 V12 and it seems to work like a charm. Now from that humongous Audi, how about placing the technology to something smaller like the a Volkswagen Golf. Slap on the TDI and hybrid technology and you now have the Volkswagen Golf TDI Hybrid.
With the world going green these days (or it’s probably just because of the sky-high gas prices), a hybrid Golf is a welcome addition. Even if I’m a Toyota fan, I’m getting more and more convinced that the Prius is overrated. What the Golf brings to the market is a car that can achieve 69 mpg and puffs out 90 g/km of CO2.
Since this is a hybrid, don’t expect that it will run like hell. The 1.2L 3-cylinder turbodiesel generates 74 hp. This is paired with
a 27 hp electric motor. But mated to Volkswagen’s new 7-speed DSG dual-clutch tranny, this car can offer decent driving.
Power is stored in a nickel metal hydride battery pack and the hybrid motor replaces the common alternator and starter to run the engine. A control system can also automatically shut the diesel engine off while idling so that you get to conserve more fuel.
