Australian Grand Prix 2008 - 15/03/08 - Part One
We went to the Grand Prix today. Only because one of Mr Smarties vendors has a corporate box there and offered free tickets. I have no interest in Formula 1 racing; the cars sound like mosquitos, look nothing like cars, it's complete unattainable and just meh. But I won't say no to freebie tickets (including a fantastic smorgasbord of food and drinks and superlative service all day by the wonderful wait staff put on there).
This is held at Albert Park lake, and it's been here about ten years now, I think. I used to live several suburbs away and would herd the cats inside for the whole weekend as the noise from the cars carried, and there are various plane exhibitions over the weekend. Having Air Force jets flying over the house tended to make everything vibrate and freak the pets out.
It's horrendously expensive to go, and we're simply in the wrong time zone for the majority audience who are in Asia and Europe - if they televise it live, it's the middle of the night over there. Wouldn't surprise me if we lose the race to Asia when the contract expires in 2010. Meh. The only good thing about having it is that they spent a fortune cleaning up Albert Park lake which was a disgusting mess before this, with junkies using the public toilets to use and dump syringes...the man made lake was drained and many tonnes of garbage hauled out of there. Lots of new landscaping came in, and the place looks lovely now.
The view from our box. This is the end of the main straight, the first corner, which causes accidents...
